Dear John; OT, OT-Andrew
I live in Boca Raton, so I didnt get "hit" by Andrew but when I was in public practice many of my clients were associated with home building in one way or another (Developers/builders) and I watched as the whole of south Dade county was developed. So I knew it well (I have lived in Fla. most of my life). Anyhow, I have a 4X4 Jeep and went down there the next day with supplies for people. The devastation was INCREDIBLE, looked like a nuclear bomb went off. There wasnt even a single street sign, traffic signal etc etc left standing and frankly, though I knew the area well I got lost. Had to navigate by COMPASS. THATS how bad it was. Brought tears to my eyes then and even does now as I type. I am happy to say that all is cleaned up now and it really looks nice down there. But for nearly a year it was not a pretty sight. Now it looks like we are going to get hit with Debby but so far doesnt look dangerous. Incidentally, I have lived through MANY hurricanes in my life and NOTHING was like Andrew. I am convinced that was something STRANGE, maybe a huge number of tornadoes inside a hurricane. The weather service in my opinion, has never fully described what it was, but the insurance companies have used it to triple and more our home insurance. I doubt we will ever see anything like it again in our lifetimes. JDN
