No, it's in reaction to there being little if any design talent left at Intel. 217mm on a .18um process is absolutely huge. The PIII is 100mm on the same process. Not only will they be getting less than 1/2 dies per wafer, but the yields will be terrible. The bigger the chip, the more chance for error. Actually, it might be safe to say they just cut capacity by 2/3!
