JDN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Souers, ssouers@fender.com CIO, Manufacturing & Process August 22, 2000, 10:37 p.m. Sun's Momentum's Got Everyone Scared A lot of major-power companies -- Microsoft, IBM, HP, EMC, Compaq, Dell, and now Intel -- sure are talking a lot about Sun. It's more than sour grapes now. It's pure unadulterated FEAR. Sun, the smallest among the group mentioned above, is gaining fast with revenues and earnings growth acceleration in every single line of their business. That sure ought to scare all these big guys who all have so much to lose to Sun. Sun is simply executing a lot better than any of these guys with a clarity of vision and focus that is unmatched in this industry. Long-term, Sun's UltraSPARC is the biggest coompetitive threat to Intel and Intel knows it. Sun has what Intel wants but Sun just keeps racing ahead. It's funny to see all these huge computer powers scrambling to cover themselves from the heat that is Sun is applying on them. You see more FUD being generated about Sun by these guys than ever before. Yeah, Intel now realizes that Sun is more of a threat than AMD. At least they're smart enough to realize that, but the fact of the matter is that Sun is not slowing down and will continue to grow at the current blistering pace. Intel, Microsoft, IBM, HP, EMC, Compaq, and Dell better all just get used to it and put their shades on because this Sun is never going to set. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jamie Header, jheader@cisco.com Manager, Computer Networks & Peripherals August 22, 2000, 10:23 p.m. Two Words Sun Rocks :-))) wINTEL Sucks !!! Scott & Ed , keep up the GREAT work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel P, dp@intel.com Partner August 22, 2000, 8:56 p.m. Intel Scared...Finally! The attack simply demonstrated how a $480b company (Intel) began to take notice of a $180b company (Sun). While investors used to follow the CPU-mania, Windows-mania, Red-hat-mania, B2B-mania, they realized all of these went away quickly because no one can do something well like Sun. Forget the Intel play jumping from CPU to graphics board and components, forget the Compaq jumping from PCs into Mini-computers (DEC), forget the IBM that jumps into everything in fashion, forget Microsoft that gets burn, forget the SGI that switches from their own OS to NT and back, forget the HP that sells printers well but loses their server business....... Sun is one company that's taking all the attention because it's been doing ONE thing all along for 18 years - Building the Network that is the computers. Communism does not apply to Sun becoz the company innovates and America is a free country. People buy sun boxes because of it's reliability. As Scott McNealey said, "we are building the BFWTS Big Freakin' Web Tone Switch". They are building the future telco infrastructure right under these people's nose. Intel is not happy at all because they still can't make the first 64 bit chip while Sun had their's years ago. Microsoft is not helping Intel in making WinTel reliable. For businesses and IT as a whole, we don't want to use WinTel becoz of reliability. You could have a 1 Gigahertz machine that crashes 4 times a day, but you still paid big $$$ for it.
