Hi Bux,

I was pondering whether the ultimate role for G* in a yacht would be what you posted:
"with limited space could have one SSB and one sat phone....in this case it might be the SSB that ends up being the "back-up" for many cruisers" and "Really small boats might opt for just the sat phone in addition to the VHF marine radio and weather fax."

I refrained from speculating since my personal experience with SSB is zilch and my cruising experience consists of one cruise from Galveston to Key West back in '83. I remember the yacht owner explaining that he mounted the SSB antenna on the transom lifeline post instead of the mast in case of dismasting.

Now that Caribbean coverage exists, seems like every yacht charter company in Florida and the Caribbean would either include a G* phone for each charter, especially bareboat charters, or offer one as an option. Who knows how many G* minutes would be sold per charter since customers range from people trying to get away from it all to those who have stay in touch regardless. Even if few minutes are sold, at least G* Super Cellular Service (G*SCS, should be trademarked by G*) gains more exposure among yacht charter customers who probably make up G* targeted market; corporate types, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, etc.

Wish I could investigate this potential G* market personally. But for now I limited to cruising on my windsurfer.

Best regards,
