Many CPUs start out around 200mm2, including K7.

Scumbria,

There wasn't much discussion around your comment. I would like a better understanding of the P4 and its implications for AMD.

If in fact its true that it will be at 200mm2+, how long is before the typical CPU size is reduced? And is the manu. of the larger chip that much more costly than a smaller chip?

There is considerable discussion about performance. While it appears that there is some degradation of performance so that a P4 at 1.5 G executes more l.2 G P3 or Athlon chip...is this as significant as it sounds? Will the buying public be able to figure this one out, or is this something that will be apparent only to the tech community?

I guess what I am asking is how serious is the P3 threat to AMD? I know there is a threat but it seems to be less than what was thought 6 mos ago. And it would appear that AMD may be able to counter the worst of it.

Just curious as to your viewpoint without the Chamber of Commerce hype.

TIA.
