Very likely so, but I don't see any reason to think that they were the ones who won the cold war.

In the case of developing nation "battlegrounds," I can't think of one that tolerated Soviet or Chinese military presence well.

No, they were not effective when they intervened directly. They were very effective when they supported home grown resistance to colonial and feudal leadership.
