Scumbria - "Why did Intel compare an 800Mhz PIII vs. a 1.5GHz P4 today?' One possibility: to visually demonstrate the value of a new, high-performance system over a mid-range existing system on a real-world video capture task. A visual "show and tell" makes for a better presentation than some dry benchmark charts.

Scumbria, Here's a quote you are sure to like from Albert Yu's presentation today. You can watch the video from the link Elmer gave on the Intel thread. The P4 stuff starts 2/3 into it. The 2GHz "demo" seemed to last less than one minute. And it was just a clock measuring "demo", not of the processor showing off any intense stuff, but they did do that with either a 1.4 or 1.5 GHz P4. "When we started this particular effort, we think about how we can really power the net of the future. I think when we started this project in 95-96 time frame - in fact that's the beginning of the internet - and we saw very clearly the net would become much more visual, much more including graphics, video, and security kind of capabilities, and so as a result of that we specifically architectured this marchicture (sp?) overlooking for those kind of of applications like streaming video and what Craig talked about, peer to peer..." Apparently Intel had the foresight to know Napster would exist so they designed the P4 to be able to handle it! And even though they had the foresight to know the Internet could handle all this stuff in 95-96, they waited until 1999 to come out with SSE!! Speaking of the time period Willy design was started, when was the Athlon conceived? Late 96/early 97?
