Do you consider "exaggerating for effect" to be the same as "a joke"?

Can you understand how other people may not have understood that it was "exaggerating for effect", let alone "a joke"? And considering some of the controversy about what is and is not acceptable posting behavior on SI, could you not understand why Bob might have wanted that cleared up?
