Japan sees record Q1 PCs sales at retailers
TOKYO, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Combined sales of personal computers (PCs) at retailers in Japan's three major areas rose 28.2 percent to a record 274,300 units in the April to June period, an independent Japanese research institute said.

The previous record for the first quarter was 214,000 units in April-June of 1999, it said.

The survey was conducted by MultiMedia Research Institute at Akihabara in Tokyo, Nihonbashi in Osaka and Ohsu in Nagoya, where many home appliance retailers are located.

The combined amount of sales at the three areas in the first quarter totalled a record 56.33 billion yen, up 21.2 percent from the previous record 46.5 billion yen a year earlier, it said.

Launches of PCs equipped with CD-R/RW drives accelerated demand, it said.

Demand at the three areas shifted to notebook PCs from desk-top types and to desktop models equipped with CD-R/RW or DVD drives from desktop models priced below 100,000 yen, it said.

But sales at those three areas accounted for 18.1 percent of Japan's overall over-the-counter market, down 5.4 percentage points from a year earlier, it said.

The drop in the ratio resulted from sales increases at large-scale stores such as Yamada Denki and Kojima Co Ltd , direct sales by PCs makers and online sales, it said.
