I have no doubt that your story is correct. But it is not always the case that when things settle down, the rank and file have an opportunity to drift off, especially when the fanatical leaders attain the mechanisms of government.....

I do not think people flourish under socialism, it is too inefficient. I do think socialist states can survive, however, partially due to the mitigating effects of the black market. But that is not even the point. In the actual event, whether or not the Soviet Union would have eventually suffered an economic crisis sufficient to cause a change in regime, I have little doubt that its demise was hastened considerably by the strategic challenge of the United States. Also, as with Lenin and the NEP, or Deng and the advent of "market socialism" (more market than socialism), Communist regimes will even dilute economic ideology to retain power........
