Tim, 1. That may be your perception but it may not be true, at least, not all the time. 2. Again not always..some city gov'ts have gotten more efficient or they have contracted out to private firms. However in many instances, gov'ts cover needs that private firms choose to stay out of like sewer and water operations, single family garbage removal, food stamp assistance, abuse of children etc. 3. The concept that we are in this together and to some degree we are responsible for each other is a hard concept for people, particularly Americans, to accept. But contrary to what our Constitution says, we are not all born equal, or with equal assets, and people stumble and fall during the course of their lifetimes and have no family or friends to help them.....I believe that in a nation as wealthy as this one, that it is wrong to have people die from starvation or hypothermia or poor nutrition. Not many people would agree with me, I am sure. However I find that countries and particular states within this country that are more concerned with the well being of all its people tend to have the best quality of life.... Much like I said to Joe in an earlier post, I really do not like these discussions because they tend to enhance our differences and very rarely lead to any kind of meaningful change in opinion. ted
