Gigabit Ethernet Switch Ports Take Off in 2Q 2000; Copper Accounts for
25 Percent

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Aug 23, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The worldwide Gigabit
Ethernet packet switch market reached over 810,000 ports shipped in 2Q 2000,
according to Cahners In-Stat Group (http://www.instat.com).

The high-tech market research firm expects the overall gigabit Ethernet switch
market to reach almost 4 million units in ports shipped and $4 billion in
end-use revenue for 2000, resulting in an all time high, over 200 percent
greater than the total number ports shipped in 1999.

"Despite holding only 3 percent or less of the ports shipped in 2Q 2000, Gigabit
Ethernet switches will finally live up to their billing in 2000, with a 21
percent compounded quarterly growth rate," said Lauri Vickers, industry analyst
for In-Stat's Voice and Data Communications Service.

"The first significant shipments of Gigabit Ethernet over copper ports, since
their introduction two quarters ago, occurred in 2Q 2000 and accounted for
approximately 25 percent of the Gigabit Ethernet ports shipped. Within two
quarters, Gigabit Ethernet over copper ports will account for more than half of
all Gigabit Ethernet ports shipped."

Quarter to quarter growth in 2Q 2000 was driven primarily by all form factors of
Layer 3 and Gigabit Ethernet switches, which grew at more than twice the pace of
the overall market.

In-Stat also found the following:

-- Cisco Systems held its No. 1 market share ranking in both
ports shipped and sales in the Gigabit Ethernet switch market
followed by Extreme Networks, Enterasys (formerly Cabletron)
and Nortel Networks.
-- North America continues to dominate switch port shipments,
representing 48 percent of the total market in 2Q 2000.
Europe, Asia and Latin America are also heating up, and
combined, are expected to represent the majority of switch
port shipments in 2000.
