Baseball: Rockies C Mayne wins game as pitcher

Aug 23, 2000 (The Sports Network via COMTEX) -- Denver, CO (Sports Network) -
Colorado Rockies catcher Brett Mayne became the first position player since 1968
to win a major league game, pitching a scoreless 12th inning in a 7-6 win over
the Atlanta Braves at Coors Field.

Mayne (1-0) entered the game in the top of the 12th after the Rockies ran out of
pitchers. He retired pinch-hitter Tom Glavine and Walt Weiss to start the frame,
but allowed a two-out single to Rafael Furcal and threw a wild pitch before
walking Andruw Jones. However, Mayne got Chipper Jones to ground out weakly to
third to end the threat.

The Rockies scored the game-winner in the bottom of the 12th. Neifi Perez led
off the frame with a single off Braves reliever John Rocker (1-1) and went to
third on a base hit by Todd Helton. After Jeffrey Hammonds lined out to a drawn
in outfield, Stan Belinda relieved Rocker and struck out Terry Shumpert before
intentionally walking Jeff Cirillo to load the bases.

That brought to the plate the evening's other unlikely hero, pinch-hitter Adam
Melhuse. Melhuse was batting for Mayne, who was not in the starting lineup and
unable to hit because of a sore left wrist.

Melhuse, who had no hits in six previous major league at-bats, lined the first
pitch he saw from Belinda into left field for his first major league hit,
scoring Perez with the game-winning run.

Melhuse's RBI single made a winner out of Mayne, who became the first position
player in 32 years to earn a victory on the mound. The last player to accomplish
the feat was the New York Yankees' Rocky Colavito, who beat the Detroit Tigers
on August 25, 1968.

The previous National League position player to post a victory as a pitcher was
Pittsburgh infielder Johnny O'Brien on July 3, 1956, against Philadelphia.
