The Band -- "Music From Big
Pink"/"The
Band"/"Stagefright"/"Cahoots"
(Capitol/EMI)

It's a very short list indeed; artists whose
work deserves a place in any record
collection. But the cross-border
assemblage known as The Band is
worthy of that status, without
qualification. At the height of
flower-power, Canadians Garth Hudson,
Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Robbie
Robertson joined Arkansas' Levon Helm
and retired to rural Upstate New York to
forge a musical union that explored
North American roots music and would
yield timeless songs like "The Weight,"
"This Wheel's On Fire," "Rag Mama
Rag," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie
Down" and "Up On Cripple Creek."

These long-overdue reissues expand the
The Band's catalogue with 25 new songs,
spread across four albums. "Music From
Big Pink" alone has grown from 11 to
20 tracks. The sound has been upgraded,
the booklets feature liner notes from
Toronto musicologist Rob Bowman, and
this is just the first in what is a projected
full reissue campaign.
