Saddam? Odd you should mention it. Tensions seem to be rising.

Iraq Won't Cooperate With UN Arms Inspectors, AFP Says
By Josh P. Hamilton

Baghdad, Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Iraq won't cooperate with an attempt by the United Nations to conduct weapons inspections inside the country, Agence France-Presse reported, citing Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz.

Hans Blix, executive chairman of the UN commission that oversees the disarming of Iraq, has a team ready to resume the search for weapons banned under sanctions imposed after Baghdad invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the UN said yesterday.

``Iraq will not cooperate with Blix, nor with his commission,'' Aziz told reporters after a parliament session, the French news service reported.

The UN's search for weapons in Iraq has been halted since December 1998, when its inspectors left the country just before air strikes by the U.S. and U.K.

The UN Security Council has offered to suspend the sanctions -- including restrictions on how Iraq spends oil revenue -- if Baghdad agrees to cooperate with arms inspections. Iraq has repeatedly said it won't tolerate any more inspections, which it says violate its sovereignty.

``Iraq will not cooperate with UN resolution 1284. It means nothing to us and its results mean nothing to us,'' Aziz said.
