Intel Announces New Media Switch Family of Ethernet Switching & Routing Devices
New Devices Enable High Bandwidth, Multimedia LAN and Telecom Applications
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 2000--

Intel Corporation today unveiled the Intel® Media Switch Family products, which provide true voice, video and data integration over corporate networks.

The Intel Media Switch Family enables advanced applications, such as voice over IP (VoIP), distance learning, streaming video, teleconferencing and corporate network videoconferencing with their multi-service capabilities including Quality of Service (QoS), Class of Service (CoS), multicasting, routing, bandwidth management and provisioning.

The Intel Media Switch Family includes various silicon hardware and software building blocks that consist of:

-- Software, including driver application protocol interfaces and
Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocol stacks (required to build Layer 2/3/4
switch routers); and

-- Royalty-free licensing of source code for Application Programming
Interfaces (APIs) that include code for all hardware dependent
parts of the design, and protocols, when used to develop products
with Intel Media Switch devices. This improves time-to-market for
the customers.

``Intel is introducing a full suite of Ethernet switching solutions, including the silicon, software, and reference platforms to allow our customers to bring their products to market faster,'' said Sean Riley, general manager, Intel Enterprise Components Division. ``These components offer multi-service capabilities that not only enable voice, video and data over Ethernet, but also enable migration to Layer 2/3/4 application-aware switching platforms. For instance, supporting multiple real-time video streaming using IP multicasting, or high-speed IP packet re-direction based on TCP socket information.''

Paul Weekes, director of Motorola's Internet Products Operation, said, ``Intel now provides highly scalable, multimedia-aware switching technology, which helps us deliver switching, routing and QoS policy management applications at wire speed and low cost.'' Weekes added, ``These products assist Motorola in migrating to a fully IP-based backplane and allow us to deliver next-generation communications products that help enable multi-service, packet-based networking.''

Intel's Media Switch Products

-- Intel® Media Switch IXE5418 Gigabit Device - A single-chip,
wire-speed, eight-port, Layer 2/3/4, switch/router that operates
at 10/100/1000 Mbps. Uses embedded DRAM for packet storage to
enable wire-speed performance;

-- Intel® Media Switch IXE2412 10/100 Device - A single-chip,
wire-speed, 24-port 10/100 plus two-port Gigabit, Layer 2/3/4
switch/router;

-- Intel® Media Switch IXE5150 Gigabit Crossbar Device - A
single-chip, eight-port, Layer 2/3/4, Gigabit crossbar with
integrated packet storage. This device can be used for cascading
multiple IXE2412 and IXE5418 devices to build a low-cost chassis
or stacked switching appliances;

-- Intel® Media Switch LXT998 8-port Integrated Switch Device - A
single chip, cascadable, eight-port, 10/100 integrated Layer 2
switch that permits QoS packet prioritization for real-time data
management for applications such as VoIP; and

-- LXT9785 8-port 10/100 Transceiver - An eight-port 10/100
transceiver supporting both half-duplex and full-duplex operation
at 10Mbps and 100Mbps.

The Intel Media Switch Software Portfolio includes powerful and flexible RTOS-independent APIs and protocol stacks, which allow vendors to port them easily to new platforms.

The suite of Ethernet components announced today are part of the Intel Internet Exchange(TM) (IX) architecture, an end-to-end family of high-performance, scalable hardware and software development solutions designed to meet the growing performance requirements of today's networks. Intel IX products meet the need for flexible and faster development, more cost-effective deployment, and future upgradability of network systems.
