Unfair trade alleged in mobile phone sales
¡¡Some mobile phone distributors and sales agents are allegedly attracting new subscribers by offering handsets for as low as 2 percent of regular prices.
¡¡
¡¡Market sources said some distributors and sales agents for PCS(personal communication service) operators, including LG Telecom and KT M.Com(formerly Hansol M.Com), are selling handsets for about 4 dollars under the condition that the subscriber uses the phone for more than 6 months. Regular prices of handsets are set between 175 dollars and 250 dollars.
¡¡
¡¡These practices violate government measure implemented in April that abolishes mobile phone subsidies. The restriction was intended to ease competition among mobile phone service operators and reduce illegal marketing practices among distributors and sales agents in attracting new subscribers.
¡¡
¡¡One distributor said it has sold about 2,000 handsets since slashing prices under the condition that the subscriber uses the phone 6 months to 12 months. A cyber shopping mall recently sold 60 handsets for similar prices under the same conditions. The distributors said, however, that most of the phones are outdated models.
¡¡
¡¡A market expert said distributor subsidies may be coming from mobile communication service providers and that this may lead to another type of unfair trade.
