This 4% number is interesting. Without knowing enough to give myself much credibility, I would
guess that number would be substantially higher. Are you talking US retail sales? And do you
know which are the largest two or three categories? I guess grocery store sales would be in
there. And what else?

Randy,

You have a point here. I was only using the US retail sales which likely is not representative of the rest of the world. I can honestly say I do not know the retail markets well in other countries and would be making things up if I tried to come up with a number. I was excluding groceries in my figures. Groceries are considered retail but they are broken out by the commerce department. I was projecting based on retail sales exluding food and energy. Also, I am only projecting. When I have all the answers, I will retire LOL. I really do not.

I'b be curious to hear results of a survey on current percentages of online retail for many
individuals. I'd even be curious about my own %. I suppose a simple browse through my last
year of credit card statements would give me a good idea. I think I fall in the 15 - 30% range
now, but that could be too high.

My suspicion is the percentage of on-line purchases by memeber of SI is higher than the norm. I know I am very high for two reasons. One is I live in a little town with very few real stores from which to choose. The other is I am very comfortable using my credit card on the net. One of my stores is in a larger town that has a region shopping mall but I can't be bothered to go there when I am working. I guess that makes me lazy:-). My retail purchases I suspect are 30% or a little greater. I even buy my clothes on-line now suits excepted.I also buy supplies for my store on-line even though there is a Staples less than a mile away. The on-line purchase of store supplies is trmendously convenient particulary since all the firms permit one to keep a list of the product items they use. This comes in handy for inkers for printing calculators. You name it.

What do you think about the reaction or maybe the correct word is the amount of sales that will come from people in larger towns? I have no experience there. I assume the people living in these towns have access to large shopping centers. On the other hand, the traffic may be a deterrent. Do you have a feel for this?
