Scarecrow, with all due respect, I think you are being a little short-sighted on CMGI's news today. You're argument about software can be applied to any company that pursues a stadium deal. Do people want to go to Staples more because they house the Lakers? Psychologically who knows...
Will Staples build trust and stability amongst customers by doing this along, with doing good busines. Maybe...
Will the move help Staples become a household name?
I think it will certainly help.

Like you said CMGI isn't known by the average joe.
Thats why you brand. Maybe CMGI wants people (who work in businesses) to know who they are and what services they sell.

I disagree about equity branding. Every tech/internet fund manager has heard of CMGI. They are just shunning the stock because they are confused about the model, don't like incubators, etc.

But I do agree that it sends a strong signal that things must be looking up

<<<I'm tempted to call this an IR stunt. With all due respect to those discussing "branding," the only "brand equity" CMGI has is in the investing community.
Period.>>>

I totally agree. This is totally a move to build their "brand name" with investors. It's an interesting move I will give them that. The stock is up 4 and change so it appears to be working, at least for now. I do think they would get more mileage by having AltaVista as the sponsor PLUS adding the text "a subsidiary of CMGI" or some such appearing on as many promotional materials as possible. I have to assume they thought of this but it wasn't an option.

Cheers

Whatever is happening, this media event of theirs has added credibility to this company. I guarantee there were many companies bidding for the rights to put their name on this stadium. They wouldn't have been awarded this contract unless their multi-year (15 years) financial status was secure. IMHO this gives them the ammunition to be more of a GE-like company of the future.

Hey, yea, I'm bias, but for the same reasons I'm still long this stock...
