Interesting choice of words relating to CDMA.-- Cooters BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Kyodo) - (EDS: MORE DETAILS) China, which has made a major effort to develop a nationwide mobile phone network, has emerged as the world's second largest mobile phone country after the United States, Information Technology Minister Wu Jichuan said Wednesday. According to Xinhua news agency, Wu told an international information technology conference in Beijing that the number of mobile phones in China rose nearly 40% from January to June this year, and China has 59.28 million mobile telephones, as of the end of June. The figure puts China ahead of Japan as the world's second biggest user of mobile phones. Wu predicted that China's information industry will grow 20% during 2001-2005, with the added value in the country's gross domestic product rising about 5%. Experts predict that China, with a population of 1.2 billion, will have 200 million mobile phones by 2010, making it one of the largest mobile phone markets in the world. With a thriving economy, mobile phone has become a booming business in China and major international telecom companies have poured into the country for a piece of the fast growing market. While most Chinese mobile phone systems use the European GSM standard, the United States has managed to wrest an agreement from China to allow the U.S.-developed CDMA mobile phone system compete in the Chinese market. Likewise, the European Union has also wrested concessions from China on the mobile phone business sector during bilateral trade negotiations on China's admission to the World Trade Organization.
