Also, as far as encryption schemes go, I agree that it would be nearly impossible for the industry to design a system to protect digitized materials. I had some in depth experience in the security industry a while back during which I got to work a bit with Rainbow Technologies (hardware dongles for high end software protection but now getting big into internet security with their encryption accelerators for VPN's and secure e-Commerce). After some conversations with Shawn Abbott, the CTO over there and a few discussions with Bruce Schneier, founder of Counterpane and one of the top encryption experts around, it became obvious to me that given enough time and effort, almost anything can be cracked. In addition, the vast majority of the encrpytion schemes out there only require minimal time and effort to crack, or do not need cracking at all and can be easily circumvented. Hollywood has the additional problems that users will not stand for an encryption scheme that complicates their lives, and the limitation to not require lots of system overhead. Furthermore, any strong authentication technology would inevitably butt heads with privacy hounds, imho. As a result, any protection scheme they come up with is going to be severly hobbled from the start and the crackers out there will decend upon it like hyenas on a rotting carcass. -enam
