(CMGI) shares jumped 15% Wednesday after the Internet company bought the rights to name the New England Patriots' new football stadium CMGI Field. CMGI, Andover, Mass., which invests in and manages Internet companies, said it will pay $7.6 million annually for the first 10 years of the naming rights deal. The annual fees for the last five years of the 15-year deal haven't yet been determined. The stadium is now under construction in Foxboro, Mass., and is slated to open in 2002. In addition to naming rights, CMGI received hospitality, sponsorship and promotional rights in and around the new stadium complex. Some of CMGI's units, including NaviSite Inc. (NAVI) and Activate Inc., will become "preferred" technology partners of the Patriots. Separately, CMGI's AdForce LLC unit, an online advertising firm, said Wednesday it formed a strategic alliance with OpenGrid Inc., a provider of wireless Internet business services. AdForce will serve, target and track advertisements to wireless devices, including cell phones, in conjunction with OpenGrid's wireless services. Another CMGI unit, NaviPath Inc., said Wednesday it signed a deal with Critical Path Inc. (CPTH) and Motient Corp. (MTNT) to deliver messaging services to NaviPath's wireless service customers. A CMGI spokeswoman said the AdForce and NaviPath announcements, together with CMGI's stadium naming rights deal, were likely contributing to Wednesday's stock movement. CMGI shares recently traded at $43.31, up $5.56, or 14.7%, on volume of 10.6 million, compared with the daily average of 5.5 million.
