What a ridiculous analogy! Unless you are before a firing squad or in a war or battling the police you don't normally expect to get shot. But there were massive indications the Soviets were building up forces to "go to the aid" of Afghanistan. The NSA advised Carter. The CIA advised Carter. The press in the weeks leading up to it asked Carter about the Soviet build-up. Carter responded that he had spoken with Brezhnev personally and received "assurances" that there would be no military action by the Soviets. Then they invaded. Donaldson asked why... and you know the answer Carter gave. The scenario you presented is so ludicrous... it is just incredibly ignorant. FT
