I believe there is something to be learned. First let us keep in mind that it is the application that captures a market, not the enabling technology albeit its importance. We can observe that: 1. Sure, PCs and IM (instant messaging) may not be as readily accessible in Japan. What this means is i-mode created the IM market in Japan. Mobile IM to be exact. 2. Although mobile IM is not likely to gain mainstream status here like it does in Japan because of the much more readily available internet access in the States, we can observe that i-mode created phenomenal demand in the mist of other competing technologies, such as voicemail, paging, wireless voice, etc. I see the following in which i-mode differentiates itself in the Japanese market: i. Charge by amount of data, at low rate ii. Mobilily iii. All benefits of IM and email, which we assume most Japanese adolescents cannot access as easily without i-mode. iv. cHTML based - very similar to HTML - good integration to the Internet community, in the ease of content development. 3. I agree that i-mode is not a technology for the States, because internet access is much more easily accessable. However analysing the i-mode market, we are more ready to identify killer apps that share enough similarities with i-mode, that we hope will potentially capture mainstream market share the same way. We look for the following characteristics: i. mobility is leveraged (doh) ii. the service is not easily accessable / applicable on our PCs or anywhere YET in our daily life, much in the same way IM and email are not as readily accessible by adolescents in Japan without i-mode iii. content and service easily set up by anyone or any business, with much the same convenience as developing HTML code; important thing is easy content development iv. dirt cheap One application that comes to my mind is position locationing + local business content. I dont know much about specifics. Maybe some experts here can help. IMHO, calaf
