Just have a squint at what might happen to your wife over here.... 07.08.98 Berlin A Greek female student goes to the [German] Foreign Office and shows her passport. She is asked whether she is the person on the passport picture and pinned to the wall and frisked without further explanation. Later she learns that the people who frisked her were Berlin police officers who were called in by the Foreign Office because the authorities believed that the passport was faked. When the student tries to explain that she is not a criminal, a female police officer comments "They all say the same". The student is not allowed to make a phone call after her arrest. In the station she is ordered to undress and she is frisked again, including intimate areas. The door is left half open, so that other male officers are able to watch. Again, she is not allowed to make a phone call. Finally, a female police officer informs her that her passport is in order and that the suspicions of the Foreign Office had not been confirmed. Nevertheless, she is forced to remain several hours in a cold cell, without shoes or a jacket. She is released in the late afternoon. Cigarettes and 2 passport pictures are missing from her jacket and her passport had been damaged. The police does not comment upon this incident as "preliminary proceedings are pending".
