Howard Rosencrans: Stocks to Drop

I didn't know they were allowed to write such things

Howard Rosencrans, director of research at HD Brous and Company, was a guest on Today's Business Thursday.

Below are some of his stocks to drop, along with his comments. Use the CNBC.com tools to research each stock.
1. Applied Materials Inc. {AMAT}

The company is the world's No. 1 maker of the complex manufacturing equipment used in semiconductor factories. Rosencrans says the semiconductor capital equipment industry has historically been highly cyclical. However, he feels there are initial signs that this industry is now topping out.

2. eBay Inc. {EBAY}

The online auction service is a cyber-forum for selling nearly 4,500 categories of merchandise. Rosencrans says virtually nothing is proprietary about eBay's business, and its brand equity is worth very little. He notes that eBay's marketing costs are growing, and that competitors are rapidly encroaching on its business.

3. Viant Corp. {VIAN}

Viant offers services including intranet development and the creation of online catalog and customer service systems. Rosencrans predicts that Viant's consulting revenues could drop dramatically, given the recent cash crunch of some Internet companies. He also feels that the "massive" insider selling at Viant will only continue.
