I thought writing options was a way to be short the equity. Would you please tell me why buying puts would be better in this case of low VIX.

as you say, "in general" that is true, but unless you're specifically playing the OEX, VIX may not be relevant.

there are plenty of underlying out there which currently have higher volatility to their respective historical norm. and, by the same argument, there's nothing to say the VIX can't and won't head lower.

just wanted to point that out things need to be noted on a relative basis, but in general your comments are worth heeding.
