The access time of a RAM decreases as you make the size of the RAM bigger if everything else remains the same. Perhaps the smaller RAM allows it to scale to a higher megahertz. As well have heard, MegaHertz sells (and performance is second).

Tim,

I don't know if the 8K 2-cycle dcache is true or not, but if it is, the reason for the small size is because of clock speed rather than die area.

An intelligent computer architect would use a large 3-cycle cache, but unfortunately for Intel, Dirk works at AMD.
