As of Monday AMDs highest clocked Athlon is again selling in the $800 range.

Not according to Sharkey:

Last week, AMD Athlon prices plunged, dipped, fell, plummeted, shot down, descended, swan dived and dropped massively a "whole freaking lot" (tm). This week, prices have continued to fall though at a far slower, more sane rate.

AMD lowered it price by 50%+ on 1 GHz Athlons, pretty dramatic however you cut it. And that's before the release of the next speed grade.

It's difficult for me not to read something into this.
