RE:"Unlike you, I don't think it's an Intel-led conspiracy to muddy the waters. And as a rational engineer, I would hope it isn't, since basing future success on voodoo marketing is a real bad formula for business."

I don't think it's necessarily a conspiracy but money talks...

As I've stated, Intels PR is top notch. Intel pays for a lot of advertising. They have a lot of shareholders, big money institutions included. They have a great long term track record. There are a lot of vested interests out there willing, one way or another to give them the benefit of the doubt and hang on any positive statement.
Who can blame Intel for trying to make the P4 look good?

Sure, benchmarks will be selected but for the rest of us Mhz still counts. Unless Willy is very seriously crippled IPC vs P6 and Athlon, Mhz will still sell chips...IMHO.
Even at 217mm2 die size...
At the least Intel will use Willy to brag on and push P3s...
until they get a SDRAM or DDR chipset for Willy.
And P3s are relatively high margin...low cost...
Sorry for preaching to the choir.
