The Enigma.....

RE: enigma
Mike, the machine was given to the British by some Poles who got it from the Germans. One of the few things they succeeded at in WWII.

I read a book on this a few years back, that described the utility of Enigma to the British during WWII. Enigma was so important, that Churchill new of the forthcoming German bombing of an English village (Coventry??), and let it take place because he didn't want the Germans to suspect they had Enigma and had the code broken.

My understanding from the book, as I vaguely recall, was that the British got the Enigma, during a raid on a German sub/boat at an Egyptian port. But I don't know the veracity of this, and don't remember the name of the book. Tekboy's pretty amazing on stuff like this. The book was told from the view of Churchill and the British, and confirms Fred Manzo's mention of the codebreakers' efforts and talents.
