As one expert to another, I'm sure you would agree, that the Germans were confident that even with a machine it was an impossible task to break the code. It was the genius of a bunch of code breakers at Bletchley Park that did the trick.

For a very entertaining read on all things cryptographic, pick up the novel "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson. It might be fiction, but I learned a ton about the whole crypto industry from it. Lots of stuff takes place at Bletchley Park. Good characters, good plot, good writing.
