I'll answer one part of that from the proprietary desk point of view: liquidity is essential, particularly when looking for a timely execution. That said, when the situation or market conditions are such that all else remains equal, orders are - as I understand it - preferably laid off in ECNs with which a given firm has a relationship.

APAKHABAR...REGARDING ECN'S...

I mainly use INSTINET for my trading. Our firm is, however, working on getting a complete ISLAND interface as well and that should be implemented in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

I use INSTINET mainly for its liquidity and ease of use. I have heard that ISLAND is another excellent source for liquidity which is why we are having it set up.

As far as I know, INSTINET is still the largest and most popular ECN used by MM's and institutions. I believe in order to post orders into ANY ECN book you would need to have an 'account' with that ECN so that they would no how to clear the trade.

All the best,
