18 months ago $200 was a really high price for a CPU. AMD just dropped their prices to $500, and you call that drastic? If they can get >$200 a CPU, their profits will go through the roof.

Sure it's not drastic.... relative to 18 months ago, but what AMD's prices are being compared to when everyone says "drastic price cuts", is not 18 months ago, but 1 month ago. And considering that Athlon prices 1 month ago, were up around $800-$1000, yes, it's a drastic price cut.
