This is exactly Microsofts problem in the future: All the companies, that make specialized software, that include an OS.

In embedded technology, it has been common for a very long time to write all software from scratch, without an OS as foundation. Mobile phones, PDAs, ship communication equipment, GPS systems etc. are all examples of that.

With the shift from multi-functional PCs to devices with specific functions, specialized software will replace general-purpose software like Windows CE and Windows.

Do you remember the days when tools wheren't electrical? Then the electrical drilling machine became popular, and all kinds of extensions for drilling machines were available. A drilling machine could be used as a screw driver, a saw etc. Today, you don't buy that general-purpose stuff. You buy an electrical screwdriver, an electrical saw, an electrical nail hammer (I don't know the english term for that one) etc... You simply buy the electrical motor as part of each device and the motor is specially designed for each purpose.

Using Windows CE for TV set-top boxes is something that harms Microsofts ability to compete in the set-top market.
