TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Japan's top high-tech companies are increasingly
outsourcing production of key components to overseas suppliers in order
to meet global demand for their products.

The latest is Mitsubishi Electric Corp., which on Friday announced plans
to start outsourcing production of flash memory chips to overseas firms by
the end of this year.

This would make Mitsubishi Electric the first Japanese maker to outsource
the chips used in the production of mobile phones, digital cameras and
other goods.

"We are considering outsourcing flash memory chips for use in mobile
phones because our current production capacity is already filled up and
we need to increase it immediately," said Motokazu Isozaki, a Mitsubishi
Electronic spokesperson.
