I could only find subscriber statistics, and not handset sales. Did I miss some detail on their website or were you simply making a general comment about the industry growth?

There are a couple of sites that track wireless subscribers on a monthly/quarterly basis....but I'm unaware of any that does the same for handset sales. Usually the "official" numbers dont come out until year-end. The quarterly reports from the various companies are usually the best source.....

From these, it can be safely concluded that Nokia is continuing to take market share from just about everybody. During the most recent quarter Nokia posted 67% sales growth in their mobile phone division vs. 29% for Ericsson and 20% for Motorola. It looks like Nokia has probably already topped 30% worldwide marketshare, and this number is likely to rise. This is particuarly amazing since Nokia has almost zero presence in PDC and CDMA, which combine for over 20% of the global market. The trend to watch though, is the progress of the Japanese/Korean consumer electronic giants. Toshiba/Sony/Samsung etc. have all made large comittments to improving their mobilephone marketshare. If succesful, we should start seeing results as 3G is rolled out.

The total number of units sold are still somewhat vague projections at this point....especially since mobile sales are especially weighted towards Christmas (as much as 40%). Since TXN supplies about 60% of the world's phones with DSP's, I think that the 425m units is probably as good an estimate as any....

For anyone interested in the phones that the rest of the world has access to....here is a pretty good site.

My personal favorite is the following....a Hitatchi color WAP phone weighing a little over 3oz.
