It was also free of ice during the Jurassic period about 65 million years ago. And you may have noticed that I pointed out: Message 14272257 If Antarctica was plodding along at 2 inches /per year it could have been 2000 miles from the south pole 65 million years ago, Far enough from the pole to be ice-free. That was the end of the Jurassic, so presumably it was even farther from the pole during most of the reign of dinosaurs. It wasn't the pole that moved, it was the land. I am referring to Earth-shifts here. When the rotation about the axis becomes unstable, the precessional wobble increases and the Earth can literally flip, creating a NEW axis it revolves around. Strong evidence exists that has occurred in the past. We may be approaching a time when it occurs again. Recent measurements show that the wobble has increased and the Earth's rotation is slowing down (in part, also due Luna.) Where on earth did you get an idea like this? The earth and moon are gravitationally locked, this is why the same side of the moon always faces the earth. This huge extra mass a quarter a million miles out keeps the precessional wobble to a minimum. The only thing that flips is the magnetic fields around the planet. TP

Shame on you Terrence. Apparently you are a fan of Velikovsky's. You certainly didn't learn that the geographic poles shifted in your science classes, unless you studied at Jerry Falwell's institute. The magnetic poles have shifted many times. The shifting of the geographic poles would be catastrophic for life on Earth. At some point one of the poles would have to be facing the Sun dead on 24/7, while the rest of that hemisphere would be in sunlight 24/7 with the Sun appearing to circle the sky at different elevations. The whole other hemisphere would be in total darkness 24/7. This is just for starters. There would be tremendous forces on the land masses causing tidal waves and earthquakes that would be almost unimaginable. That certainly did not happen when even primitive humans were alive. Your claim that a new axis can be created as the Earth flips around would also have to flip the laws of physics around. The inertial forces would be unbelievable if such a thing could occur. The Earth would be torn to shreds. Such action has never been observed in tops or gyroscopes. << Some evidence suggests that the region in the Pacific where Hawaii now lies was once the geographic North Pole. Before the last Earth-shift. >> Please supply the source of your information. You may have taken science courses in the past, but you need to take some remedial courses now. Your mind has become corrupted by the likes of Velikovsky, Rush Limbaugh, creationists, and the wrong wing. Repent now, or the damage to your mind will become permanent. I fear that it already has. It also mirrors the sad state of sad state of scientific knowledge in American society today, that I totally blame the wrong wing for causing, by killing off the teaching of real science in our schools, and pushing for creationism bullshit and the like.
