Level 3 Aims At All Comers With Its Fiber-Optic Network

Nice interview in todays IBD, 8/30/2000, p. A8, with Jim Crowe. (Tis not online but here are a few snippets).

"Among the potential bullies is start-up Level 3 Communications, Inc. It's expected to finish its U.S. and European fiber-optic network by year's end. Then it will take the gloves off, says Chief Executive James Crowe"

"Q: Energy firm Enron Corp. is pushing for a big industry change--trading bandwidth like commodity exchanges. Will that take hold ?
A: We don't think it makes much sense, but some of our best customers disagree, and Enron is an example. If we are wrong, then we'll accomodate bandwidth trading. When technology changes rapidly, getting someone to take a long or short position two years out is impossible. Who's going to take a long position in a (fiber link) between San Francisco and Los Angeles when there's a good chance a whole new product may displace it ?"

More Q&A about LVLT unveiling "disruptive pricing for bandwidth", about LVLT shares down 50% since Feb.
