Well, I am not sure that I can set aside the melodies well enough to judge how they might stand alone. To me, though, they are as good or better than any genuine folk song I can think of, which is why I posted them. As for the defects you identify in the Byrds song, well, the first is real, if somewhat minor, but the second I object to. The "price" is the effort made to succeed, which can indeed be a strange game, with a dubious prize........
