Re: the web server apps which suck up all that CPU power are scripting type programs: ASP, JSP (all polymorphic code). Having many unpredictable branches, these types of programs fundementally will not run well on EPIC type archetectures

Ratbert,

We've discussed this at length before on the old thread and on the Intel thread, IA64 is not going to be a good web server because of the EPIC architecture. Sun's and IBM's commitment to java is why they both went with heavily multi-threaded designs.

Like you suggested before, IA64 systems will be great for things such as weather prediction applications where the server is dedicated. You just stick it in the corner and let it run all day.

Ratbert, I believe Anand's decision could be the beginging of an industry trend. Once OEMS start advertising system figures like "web pages served per dollar spent," AMD will have sucessfully ambushed another Intel stronghold.

I think Anand and you are on to something here. I think Jerry is too. The Athlon is one fine processor and offers the most bang for the buck out there. With upcoming DDR it may also offer the most bang period. Sledgehammer with 2 Athlon cores will offer unheard of performance in applications such as Anands. Apparently Wall Street not only believes that flash is dead, that processor box sales are dead, but also that the growth of the internet is dead. Seems to me they're wrong on all accounts!

Kindest regards,
