STOPP International: McDonald's Turns Chicken Over Condom Issue

WASHINGTON, Aug 28, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- "What's next? McCondom
Happy Meals?" asked Edward Szymkowiak, National Director of STOPP International.
Szymkowiak is also asking the president of McDonald's, Jack Greenberg, to
publicly distance the company from Planned Parenthood's use of McDonald coupons
in its Ohio condom distribution program.

Szymkowiak's request comes on the heels of reports that McDonald's -- egged on
by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) -- has spoken out
boldly in defense of the well being of chickens ("McDonald's Tells Farmers to
Treat Chickens Better," 8/23 Washington Post, front page).

"How about speaking out against the abuse of your good name by Planned
Parenthood, which has used McDonald's gift certificates in Ohio to promote
condom distribution?" asked Szymkowiak in a letter to Greenberg.

In the Washington Post article on McDonald's response to PETA's calls for
chickens' rights, Post financial analyst Bruce Raabe said, "This should be seen
as part of the same phenomenon -- of companies trying to get out ahead of a
potential problem and turning their own reaction into a potential asset."

Szymkowiak asked Greenberg to adopt the same strategy with the condom scandal as
well. To date, however, McDonalds has remained silent. "A lot of parents would
be impressed if McDonald's distanced itself from the controversy," Szymkowiak
said. "Such a reaction would be an asset. Otherwise, the public will view this
matter with a mixture of disgust and humor. That's what makes it such good
fodder for the talk radio hosts who are requesting interviews with STOPP about
this matter. People are wondering why McDonald's doesn't say something publicly.
Silence implies consent."

STOPP is a division of American Life League, the nation's largest pro-life
educational organization with more than 367,000 supporting families.
