The Mycenean and Cretan civilations thrived with writing, commerce, and technology. I don't think the knowledge was limited to just a few individuals. They were suddenly wiped out. Some writers call it the First Dark Age. Its hard to distinguish the real history from the myths, but Jason and the Argonauts, Minos, Theseus, etc seem to reflect real events. Somewhat embellished, of course.

According to new evidence, (a Smithsonian Magazine article asserts) Neanderthal may have cross-bred. Thus those genes were passed onto homo sapiens.
