Isn't that story more than a week old. High profile analysts usually don't get fired (unless there is cause) because they have guaranteed contracts. Merrill pays bonuses at the end of January. If ML becomes disenchanted with an analyst, they often hire a replacement and offer the incumbent analyst another position with the hope, in my opinion, that the analyst leaves voluntarily.

ML recently hired a chip equipment analyst and offered the incumbent another job. The incumbent left and ended up taking the new analyst's former job.

Re: reputation. According to securities regulations, ML determines whether Blodget's research is worthy for publication and dissemination. If you see a report or see him on TV, you should be able to assume that ML has approved and endorsed what he wrote or said.

If he's "fired" (which I think is unlikely - it would be much more genteel than that) I'm sure ML will give him a nice severance deal. He made them a lot of money.

I think it is ML, SJ Cowen, SB, etc, who are the silly ones, not the analysts they told to pump up these helium balloon .com companies.
