The "connection" discussed here is not necessarily Pronto. My response to you was more hypothetical, more general, and certainly not representative of any position that Pronto may may not adopt. I independently came to my own conclusion that the VRTA chip could ease the real estate pressures at these remote CEVs where the CLECs have be clamoring for co-loco space, which have led to the recently announced field trials of the first RTs.

I think the chip issue is something that the equipment manufacturers are going to have to look at. If their customers express a need for such versatility, which IMHO is likely at least at some point in the future, it is likely the manufacturer will incorporate such a chip into their equipment and market the hell out of it to the telco facility owners such as SBC's ASI. I would think any opportunity for ASI to enhance the versatility of its facilities to create a more efficient economic model is going to be one it will serious consider, and this kind of chip technology presents such an opportunity. But, IMHO as far as Pronto is concerned, the burden to provide this solution will rest upon ASI existing vendors such as ALA and AFCI.

Would SBC be motivated to push for such versatile equipment? Well, maybe, but not immediately. As I see it, when the real estate in these CEVs becomes increasingly filled to capacity, or SBC sees a need & a market to offer SDSL or RDSL along the loop, it will certainly be response to any manufacturer offering such a comprehensive DSL solution.

I also don't necessarily view the CLECs as the nemesis of the incumbent's. ASI views itself as a facility provider, not a carrier. If there is demand to deploy more versatile facilities that would enable it to provision additional lines out of its existing terminals, then I think it is motivated to increase its revenue base whether it be from its own incumbent parent, or a CLEC. The money is still green.
