This morning, I suddenly recalled Clinton's witticism during the Democratic Convention and I realized how it might neatly apply to the African context:

He also again attacked Republicans for delaying his African American and Hispanic judicial nominees, many of whom have been blocked for months and in some cases for years. The president referred to them as being held in "political jail" by senators who don't want minorities in federal judgeships.
And he tried to take credit for the strong economy on behalf of the party, saying "If you want this thing to go on, everybody who wants to live like a Republican needs to vote Democrat this year." [...]
As Bill Clinton is currently touring Central Africa (Nigeria, Tanzania) for the second time --quite a far-reaching shift in US foreign policy-- I find it appropriate to coin his (Hoover?) quote for the peoples of Africa:
"If you wanna live like a European you'd better let Americans in".

Impeachment Lobbyist Bob Barr and Trent Lott and their Racist Organization the Coalition of Conservative Citizens
Here is a quote from the WEB site of the Coalition of Conservative Citizens. This is the group that both Bob Barr and Trent Lott have been involved with, have spoken to, and have praised in effusive terms. Both Barr and Lott now claim they knew nothing about the views of the COFCC (CCC for short) before they gave speeches to it and praised it for its principles and beliefs.
"It seems likely that his beliefs are actually a result of his inner black culture. Call him an Oreo turned inside out. Whether it's Clinton blowing some Jazz (sic) on his sax.. or having black Vernon Jordan as one of his closest friends or having black Betty Currie as his secretary ... or having Jesse Jackson over to watch the Super Bowl ... the picture of Bill Clinton that emerges is one of a liberal black who doesn't like whites very much."

From that column, here is just a bit of the philosophy of the Coalition of Conservative Christians that both GOP Majority Leader Trent Lott and Impeachment Manager Representative Bob Barr addressed and praised effusively for their principles:
"'The Southern people is comprised of the physical descendants of the 40,000 Cavaliers who migrated to the shores of Virginia and the 225,000 Scots-Irish who later migrated to the Carolinas in the early 1700s, along with those kindred peoples who have joined with us along the way through migration and marriage and war.' So says Dennis Weaver, who calls himself chairman of the North Georgia Chapter for the Council of Conservative Citizens, a group obsessed with the purity of the white race. In a separate screed, Weaver declares that "Southern nativity alone does not confer Southern nationality."
Senator Trent Lott and Representative Bob Barr must be proud of their praise for this group and their appearances and speeches before this group.

In addition to his support for the White Supremacist Council of Conservative Christians, Lott was also involved with extreme racist White Citizen's Councils. Among the ideas they propound, in the words of Robert B. (Tutt) Patterson, a founder and regular columnist of the original While Citizens Council:
"No one can deny the importance of the question of miscegenation or race-mixing," "Its very essence involves the preservation of the white race as well as the Negro race. It is a matter of racial survival..."Western civilization, with all its might and glory, would never have achieved its greatness without the directing hand of God and the creative genius of the white race," "Any effort to destroy the race by a mixture of black blood is an effort to destroy Western civilization itself. To deny this is to deny all history."

Where Sexual and Racial McCarthyism Meet
Another key intersection of sexual McCarthyism and race-hatred are the continual allegations from Christian Right Republicans that President Clinton is the father of a black child by a former prostitute. Although disproved by DNA testing, this allegation is made on a daily basis on internet newsgroups, along with typical Clinton-hater fantasies about the President having sex with Chelsea, killing Vince Foster, and running a drug smuggling operation in Arkansas. The obsession on Clinton's alleged black child brings together the sexual and the racial McCarthyism. Here is just one example of the right-wing rumor factory about race, sex, and Clinton:
"Clinton's fondness for anything under the skirt is well known by now - there is Jennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinsky. But new explosive revelation has it that that Bill may has slept with another woman, this time, the woman is a prostitute, an Arkansas prostitute. The African American prostitute, Bobbie Ann mentioned that she serviced Bill Clinton at his mansion while he was Governor of Arkansas. It is not yet clear if the famous Clinton Cigar was used during the sexual escapades. However, she did say that she bore the President a son, a result of one of their sexercises. The name of the boy is Danny Williams (William is the first name of the President). DNA testing whose popularity soured to new heights during the O.J.Simpson trial and the Starr investigation is underway in the Danny Williams fiasco."

At Least David Duke Doesn't Hide His Beliefs
The candidate favored to win the Louisiana House seat of disgraced former Speaker-designate Bob Livingston, is GOP rising star David Duke, the former Ku Klux Klan leader. In an interview in January, 1999, Duke claimed that Jews are conspiring to destroy the genetic foundation of the White Race in the United States. When asked how he justified such a claim, which is made in his recent autobiography, Duke stated that there was a Jewish conspiracy to distort immigrations laws to let subhuman racial groups into the U.S. who would destroy the White Race culture and genetics and bring lawlessness, illegitimate children, and moral depravity. Duke's ideas are not much different from those of the Coalition of Christian Conservatives (although Duke focuses on the Jewish conspiracy behind the attack on the white race more than the CCC does), but unlike Rep. Bob Barr and GOP Majority Leader of the Senate Trent Lott, Duke does not simultaneously praise a racist agenda and then lie about it when caught.
