The distinction is not worthy of exploration IMO.

I think the distinction may be worthy of exploration, for the individual who is concerned about his/her own motivations. But it is usually not worthy if it is other people doing the exploring.

As Rambi has pointed out, this issue was once "hot" among psychologists, who were "puzzled" by the very phenomenon of altruism. Psychologists are funny folk, with an infinite capacity to be amazed by the obvious.

P.S. Btw, Mother Theresa did have her detractors, who argued that she was a very monster of selfishness.
