% Increase 7.8% 6.7% 0.6% 14% 13%

Comment: With those kinds of performance increases at a price only marginally higher (or equal to) conventional SDRAM, use of DDR is a "no brainer". I'm looking forward to DDR for selfish reasons too, I plan on a building several Mustangs for the several of the folks in my family later this year. I'm getting real excited about DDR and am having a hard time waiting for all the reports and reviews soon to come.

And you say AMD and its partners are focused on use of DDR with AMD Athlons and Athlon motherboards/chipsets?

Kindest regards,
CrazyMan

Milo,

I wonder if we will really see that kind of performance increase from DDR DRAM that we all are hoping for. There was a direct comparison of the performance increase by DDR memory for the Athlon and the P3. The P3 showed a much more significant performance increase than the Athlon.

So what's the reason that on average the Athlon gained only 5-10%? Could it be due to the fact that the Athlon is designed to reach high frequencies with large but relatively slow L1 cache, therefore having higher latencies? Maybe the "aggressive" design of the P3 with smaller, but faster internal cache makes better use of faster memory. (For the P4, this would be even more apparent.)

Just some thoughts...
Peter
