The release tomorrow, reinforced by the list of OEMs carrying the 1.1 gig Athy, followed by 100 MHz inrements almost monthly for the next 5 months, places AMD in the very enviable position of undisputed and unchallenged market leader in the 1 gig and up microprocessor segment...and just in time for the historically seasonally strong Q3 and Q4... By the end of Q4, it is conceivable that the entry bar for microprocessors will be raised to the 1 gig level and that AMD's competitor will still be producing poster child 1 gig PWeeiii microprocessors...(Those PR guys/gals over at the competitor's HO better be rewarded with one king/queen size end-of-year bonus if they can continue successfully foisting the ruze on the unsuspecting public through to the year end). Crazyoldman, perhops the statement by Mr. Ruiz that "This is a real part, not a poster child posing for leadership." represents that point of AMD "escape velocity" that Mr. Sanders referenced not too long ago as it would seem, in a relative sense, that with the 1.1 gig release tomorrow that AMD has achieved a new orbit, hitherto uninhabited, even by a competitor 50 times its size... If the introduction of the Athlon 1 year ago, in baseball analogy, was the "homerun" needed by AMD to tie the game, the introduction of the 1.1 gig Athy in retail quantities tomorrow, is the "grand slam" that puts AMD well ahead in the game... or as Mr. Ruiz says refering to the 1.1 gig Athy: "This is a real part, not a poster child posing for leadership." (That quote is a keeper...Six months out, and from a wholly different (i.e historical) perspective than today, we might look back at this date when Mr. Ruiz made this statement, as being the date that marked yet another new beginning for AMD...the period in which AMD reached escape velocity...)
