Is there anything else relevant here?

Very little. Reflecting upon the evolution of the PC reveals the vulnerability of companies at significant transition points - e.g. Digital Research to Microsoft with the 8 bit to 16 bit transition and the aforementioned Wordperfect to Word shift with the change from Dos to Windows. Now whether this idea of company leadership shift has any relevancy in other technological areas such as 2G to 3G and voice to data in the wireless area is subject to speculation.

<<Is this discussion on the specs of our first PCs going anywhere?>>

The implications behind the stories are huge:

- The PC revolution is 20 years old and still going strong
- We are all participants in one of the greatest transformations the world has ever seen
- We have all been faced with opportunities we didn't recognize at the time
- I feel very fortunate to be a part of this great group of people who have similar shared experiences and can open my eyes to the next big thing before it passes me by

Maybe we should have Apollo include a survey of PC specs in his next poll of G&K holdings.

Yeah, good idea.
If he's stupid enough to volunteer to do the Portfolio Survey, he's probably dumb enough to do a PC Survey, too. <g>

Thought I'd take this opportunity to say hello, and amaze everybody with my early PC experience, too. <g>

In 1990, I bought my first PC from Compuadd. I asked my smarter, computer-friendly buddy whether I should get a 286, or the just released 386 chip. He advised me that the 286 was "plenty fast enough for him". I never fail to tease him about that dumb advice, every time I see him. We're both speed freaks today. BTW, I was so intimidated by that device, I let it sit in the boxes for a couple months. My wife, with no technical background whatsoever, put it together and hooked it up and had it running when I got home one evening. Even with that, I was hopelessly lost. I didn't know Dos, or Dosshell. I called up technical support and asked them what I was supposed to do.........and they advised, "start with C:\".

Great, but then what????????
